GM Counts On Higher Oil Prices

GM CEO Fritz Henderson is planning the future of GM around it.

Fuel economy has kind of been a stranger to the GM biz plan, but no more. The company looks to produce (in a lean way of course) smaller fuel efficient cars.

Chevy Volt is still on the front electric burner, even though some say it’s too expensive to make. The ‘green’ powertrain R&D also lags behind Toyota. Still, never count the miracles of modern technology out.

Obama Touts Fuel Economy

Automakers say “OK” to new fuel efficiency rules, but the biggest hurdle is to have consumers say “OK” too.

This means that big gas-guzzlers must go! Look to smaller, lighter cars.

“You could achieve the standards today with ultralight, really small cars,” said Jeremy Anwl, chief executive of the automotive Web site, “but how many people are really going to buy those?”

The new fuel economy plan says that passenger cars (and light trucks) must get at least 35.5 mpg by 2016.

So expect the price of those SUVs to go way up.

Experts say high gas prices would certainly encourage a move to more fuel-efficient vehicles. Let’s not got carried away here!

Cash For Clunkers

It could happen. Last week Pres. Obama & key House Dems agreed to include “Cash for Clunkers” in a new major energy bill.

The program would offer federal payments to those who scrapped their gas-guzzlers in favor of more energy efficient rides. Europe has already had success with something like this.

Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), a longtime champion of the auto industry, said the plan would “result in hundreds of thousands of new vehicles being purchased across the country.”
