A Giant Leap

neil_armstrong.jpgFor all of us who thought we were seeing Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, can we still be sure? Rumors have been circulating on the internet for years that the filming was done somewhere out in the desert on Planet Earth.

Now NASA reports that they have lost the original tapes. In all, about 700 boxes of Apollo lunar transmissions have gone missing.

“We haven’t seen them for quite a while. We’ve been looking for over a year, and they haven’t turned up,” spokesman Grey Hautaloma said.

The material was held by the National Archives, but returned to NASA sometime in the late ’70’s. Mr. Gorsky, do you have anything to do with this?

Busses and Trains

A report from Pennsylvania says mass-transit ridership has had double-digit increases. You would think that would be great news, but no. The funding isn’t there.

Last year Gov. Rendell used $412 million in federal highway money to bail out mass transit. Republican challenger, Lynn Swann critized him for that, and not coming up with a longterm solution.

The Transportation and Reform Commission will make a recommendation, but not until after the election.

Riders, you’re doing the right thing. Now, keep your fingers crossed!

It’s the Gas Pump, Stupid!

The new rallying cry for Democrats, as prices top $3/gal.

In Renton, WA, “Gas Pump Man” was on the scene at rush hour, waving his pump, and a sign “Honk if you want lower gas prices.” Volunteers for the Democratic challenger for the House were with him.

All over the US, Democratic candidates point out the subsidies to Big Oil, companies already earning record profits.

Republicans point out that Democrats are no help, voting against bill after bill intended to stabilize gas prices, increase refinery capacity, and boost the energy supply.

Make no mistake, high gas prices are an issue. Take senior citizens, or people who have to commute a ways to work from affordable housing.

We can only hope discussions about gas prices do not in fall in the same category as those about the weather.

Price Update

Reduced Middle East tensions sent oil prices eighty-two cents/barrel lower today, to a price of $73.53. Gasoline futures also moved lower, back below $2.00/gallon in the wholesale market. This provides some relief from the recent price shocks.
