Are they a transparent way to pass higher costs on to consumers? Yes, customers are paying more. Take a look at UPS, whose surcharge “only kicks in when diesel is more than $1.50/gal.” Think 2003. Duh!! That would be ages ago.

Nevertheless, you are paying this. FedEx adds an additional $1 to your $21 charge to ship. I guess you must assume nobody else is shippping to your destination. What a crock!

We just can’t see the logic. If fuel costs are higher, raise the price (instead of hiding under a fuel surcharge) and see what the market is willing to bear.
